Unlike other animals, pet rabbits do not have fleshy pads (calluses) on the soles of their feet; instead, the skin is covered directly with fur. Consequently, if the fur on the soles wears away, the skin is subjected to direct irritation, often leading to a condition known as pododermatitis (sore hocks)—characterized by calluses, infections, and potentially abscesses.
To prevent bumblefoot, it is crucial to use soft, cushioned flooring that minimizes friction and to carefully select the right waste tray.
Rabbit urine is alkaline and contains high levels of ammonia, calcium, minerals, and salts. Contact with urine-soaked paws can cause alkaline burns, increase the risk of infection on the sensitive skin of the feet, and aggravate symptoms of pododermatitis (sore hocks). Therefore, it is crucial to select a litter tray that prevents urine from pooling and features a thickness and rigidity designed to minimize irritation to the rabbit's feet.
